Module Description: This module introduces the students to the fundamentals of atomic theory, the periodic table, chemical bonding, stoichiometric calculations and thermochemistry.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Atomic Theory and Periodic Table
Sub-atomic particles, electronic structure of atoms, structure of the periodic table, classification of the elements, trends in properties of elements
Chemical Bonding
Ionic and covalent bonds, valance bond theory, intermolecular forces, hybridisation, shapes of molecules and ions, relevant examples
Stoichiometry
Balanced equations, the mole, solutions, concentration calculations
Thermochemistry
First law of thermodynamics, Hess’s Law, heats of reaction, calorimetry, enthalpy changes, bond energies
