Module Description: This module considers the concept of innovation in relation to the tourism industry. It examines the factors influencing change in the tourism industry; how experience with the industry impacts demand and the need for New Product Development. The importance of sustainable innovation in tourism as well as enabling the transition to the digitialisation of the tourism destination and experience. An assessment of new forms of tourism will be explored. The module also aims to acquaint students with the processes, and develop the techniques, involved with ideas generation for products, services and processes, both within existing organisations as an intrapreneur or as an entrepreneur in the development of new business ventures.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Examine the trends in tourism innovation including but not limited to: regenerative; SMART; circular economy; digitialisation; interpretation; slow tourism; community tourism; inclusive tourism.
LO2 Explain the management of innovation in firms and the role of creativity in all functions throughout the organisation and the challenges of a SME dominated industry.
LO3 Assess both the internal and external environmental factors which can act as barriers to innovation and change, including sustainable environmental practices and digitalisation.
LO4 Critically evaluate theories of creativity and the importance of developing a creative culture within the tourism ecosystem beyond the individual firm.
LO5 Explain the theories and models of new product development and new service development within the tourism industry. Analyse best practice examples and innovative tourism case studies.
LO6 Recognise the dynamic nature of the tourism industry, the transformation of the tourism distribution system and the role of technology in these developments.

Significance of innovation in an increasingly competitive tourism industry. The role of innovation in all types of tourism organisations, its limits and applicability. Analysis of the key trends impacting on the tourism industry and the innovative solutions to address these trends.
Innovation Management
Definitions. Models of Innovation - Serendipity, Linear Models, Simultaneous Coupling Model, Interactive Model, Innovation Lifecycle, Network Models. Innovation as a Management Process.
Barriers to Innovation & Change Management
Managing innovation within firms. The problems and barriers impinging on change in the tourism industry. Resistance to change both internally and externally. Change management and overcoming implementation problems. Challenges of an SME dominated industry.
New Service and New Product Development
Definitions, theories and models of new product development. new service innovation - Characteristics of services, classifications of service innovations and new service development models.
Theories of Creativity & Creative Thinking Methods
Theories of creativity; Models of creative problem solving and application of these models. The use of creative thinking techniques within creative problem solving. Enhancing creativity in firms and developing a creative culture.
Technology and Tourism
The role of technology in tourism innovation. Service efficiency and improvements in productivity. New methods of service delivery and tourism distribution. Impacts of technology on tourism. Strengths and weaknesses associated with the use of technology in tourism businesses. Best practice and case study analysis.
