This module will look at the entrepreneurial process as well as introducing the student to the role and importance of the small enterprise to the tourism sector and will focus on the contribution of the government to tourism business creation.

LO1 |
Outline the contribution of entrepreneurs and innovative products and services in the modern tourism industry. |
LO2 |
Appraise and evaluate the characteristics and influences of the various categories of entrepreneur. |
LO3 |
Examine the idea generation process and the evolution of a commercially viable business opportunity from an idea. |
LO4 |
Evaluate the role of networks, and in particular Tourism Learning Networks, in the development of new Tourism business. |
LO5 |
Examine the role of the government in entrepreneurship and the role of government agencies in tourism business. |
LO6 |
Critically analyse and evaluate contemporary issues which affect the Tourism SME. |

Definition, key principles, characteristics of and motivation to becoming an entrepreneur. Corporate Entrepreneurship.

The Tourism Business Environment
The role and importance of the tourism SME in Irish Tourism. Anlaysis of Tourism SME by sector including culture & heritage, attractions, accommodation, food,wellness & business tourism. Stakeholders and micro / macro impacts on the tourism SME.

Idea Generation and Evaluation
Sources of ideas, techniques for generating new ideas, creativity and innovation, evaluating potential business ideas.

Tourism Learning Networks
The role of networks in enhancing small business performance and professionalism. Formal and informal business networks. Professional development

Government & Policy
National Job Creation and Entrepreneurial Policy. The role of Failte Ireland in Tourism SME development. Government role in funding the small tourism business

Contemporary Issues in Small Business
Environmental issues, Succession Planning, Business Finance and any other relevant contemporary issues in the sector will be addressed
