Module Description: The dissertation is designed to provide an opportunity for students to undertake a substantial academic project in the area of Hospitality and Tourism. The research project is intended to build on the taught modules of the award and is designed to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the degree programme. This initial module focusses on the review of literature to the proposed research topic and a methodology plan.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Develop a comprehensive research proposal and literature review concerning the tourism or hospitality research project under investigation
LO2 Make use of appropriate sources of data and demonstrate application of academic writing.
LO3 Critically review academic literature relevant to the research, and determine where gaps exist and primary research is necessary.
LO4 Apply various research methodologies and critically appraise their appropriateness to their research
LO5 Analyse and present Primary sources of data

Indicative Content
Development of a Research Plan
Sourcing data, Principles of Academic Writing, Use of End Note, Accessing Library Resources, Research Methodologies and Survey tools and techniques, Data Analytics, Interpretation and Presentation of data.
Conduct Independent Research
The student will need to undertake a detailed investigation into a topic specifically related to the tourism industry. An extensive literature search and critical evaluation of previous research related to the area under investigation
Academic Research
Thorough analysis of secondary data on chosen topic including a comprehensive search of academic and industry reports; books; journals; statistics and e-sources of data.
Research Methodolgies
Analysis of the various research methodologies and methods employed in tourism research
Managing a Research Project
The students will be required to submit a completed literature review including the chosen methodology for the empirical research of the project. Under guidance students will be expected to display a high standard of academic writing, clearly presented with the use of appropriate referencing where required.
