| Module Description: |
This module introduces the learner to gender studies. It reviews the role and status of women in Ireland. The module also considers gender and masculinity and reviews the implication of the above for community and community development.

Introduction to gender studies
Definitions of ‘sex’ and ‘gender'; Biological differences; Some research findings on 'sex differences'. Nature v Nurture debate. Sociological explanations for gender differences.

Gender and Socialisation
Target of Socialisation; Agents of socialisation; Social learning theory; Cognitive approach; Identification theory.

Women in Ireland
Women and the Roman Catholic Church, Marriage in the 18th and 19th centuries; The First Wave of Feminism. Women and 'the Nationalist Movement'; Women in post-independent Ireland; The 1937 Constitution. The Influence of the ICA (Irish Countrywomen's Association). The Influence of the IHA (Irish Housewives Association). The Second Wave of Feminism. The different feminist perspectives. The current position - equality, inclusion, division of labour etc

Defining Masculinities, Men and Masculinities, 'Crisis of Masculinity'. Fathers' Rights in Ireland. Issues of concern (drugs, crime, education etc).
