| Module Description: |
This module is intended to introduce newcomers to higher education to a range of ways of conducting secondary research using basic traditional and web-based information sources and services. It also introduces learners to the reporting of research findings in accordance with established academic practice (in terms of both formatting and structuring papers and reports and applying a standard referencing system).

Use the main features and functions of the Windows 7 operating system, with a particular emphasis on file management. |

Use Microsoft Word to create reports and papers of an appropriate academic standard in terms of format, layout, structure, etc. |

Exploit a range of web-based and traditional information sources and services based on systematic and effective searching strategies. |

Introduction to ICT
Overview of main features of a computer and a range of peripheral devices, hardware and software concepts, basic concepts regarding the Internet.

The Windows OS
Main features of the Windows operating system, managing windows, managing files and folders, settings, and other system controls.

Writing Papers
Organising your thoughts and data, planning your essay, structuring your essay, layout and format, conventions of style and form, formatting and editing in MS Word, saving your documents.

The World Wide Web
Overview of World Wide Web, URLs and HTML, browsers and browser features, saving and copying from web-based sources, search engines and subject trees.

Information sources and services
Basic concepts in information science, overview of range of information sources and services, searching strategies, searching the Web, saving, copying and citing Web-based sources.

The Harvard Referencing System
Basic structure and format of citation styles, gathering data for the Harvard style, using the Harvard referencing system in MS Word documents, citing Web-based and other, non-traditional, information sources.
