Module Description: This module provides an overview of Financial Management. Students will learn about the role of the finance manager in modern institutions. Students will also develop the technical skills for project evaluation using various investment appraisal methods as well as developing an appreciation of sources of finance for companies including the stock exchange.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Discuss the importance of the role of the financial manager in the modern institution
LO2 Discuss the concept of shareholder value and how this is maximised,as well as agency theory and the ethical issues confronting finance managers
LO3 Describe the concept of the time value of money and use this principle and other investment appraisal techniques to evaluate various investment proposals
LO4 Explain and apply basic principles of bond,share and company valuation
LO5 Evaluate the short,medium and long term options for raising equity finance and describe the functioning of the securities markets

Role of Finance Manager
Changing role of finance in modern organizations
Investment appraisal
Time value of money. Techniques for investment appraisal such as Payback,ARR,IRR,NPV - evaluation and comparison of techniques.Empirical appraisal of projects
Raising Equity Finance
Ordinary Shares and Shareholder Rights. Primary Markets and IPO's. Stock markets and venture capitalists. Performance ratios such as dividend yield,EPS and PE ratios
Share & Company Valuations
Share value, zero growth stocks,PE method, Free cash flow method and balance sheet method
