Module Description: Students will learn about the history of fashion and will be introduced to a range of practical techniques to create and construct textile items. Furthermore, students will explore a range of design techniques.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Identify fibres, their sources, production processes and care.
LO3 Demonstrate and appraise fundamental textile, craft and design skills.
LO4 Creatively apply design processes and a range of creative skills to transform inspiration into designs.
LO5 Construct and evaluate a household item using a variety of embellishment, design and construction techniques.

Indicative Content
History of Fashion
Historical developments in the fashion industry and how they have shaped the current industry. The development of popular western fashion. How societal changes affected clothing trends.
Fundamental Sewing Skills
Health and safety, basic hand sewing, machine sewing, seaming and fabric texturing.
Colour, Design and Craft
Embellishment techniques. Various colour application and dyeing techniques. Various textiles creation and craft techniques.
Creative Skills
Sourcing inspiration. Translating inspiration into design. Creating in a sketchbook. Creating mood boards.
Textiles
Fibre types, sources and production methods. Fabric construction types and uses. Fabric finishes and textiles for interiors. Textile care and stain removal techniques.
Construction
Applying the design brief process, selecting the correct materials and techniques. Design skills and development.
