Module Description: This module introduces the student to the concepts of enterprise, entrepreneurship and business development in sports organisation settings. It examines the driving forces and supports necessary to foster entrepreneurship and business development in an applied manner. The student will examine business feasibility strategies and investigate opportunities for enterprise development using relevant case studies.

Indicative Content
Nature and characteristics of entrepreneurs
What is entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial process?Entrepreneurship skills. Entrepreneurial rating scale. Innovation and entrepreneurship. Trends driving entrepreneurship. Characteristics of entrepreneurs. Motives for start-up.
Forces driving entrepreneurship and business development
Forces driving entrepreneurial activity. The nature of the business opportunity – franchising, purchasing existing businesses, start-up enterprises. Entrepreneurship in different contexts – intrapreneurship, mediated entrepreneurship, public service entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, female entrepreneurship.
Requirements for a new business venture
Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats including competitor analysis. Primary and Secondary market research including questionnaire design, interview techniques, sampling, etc. Understand some key issues involved in running and growing a business including people management, marketing, finance and legal considerations.
Feasibility framework addressing a business scenario
Evaluate a business scenario and investigate alternative solutions. Build a framework following a needs analysis of a generic business case study e.g. setting up a franchise, additional revenue stream, workplace health and wellbeing.
Sources of assistance and finance available to new enterprise.
The role of the state in supporting entrepreneurship. Encouraging and supporting the environment for enterprise. Funding and financing. Local and National assistance and incentives. The global entrepreneurial monitor (GEM) Reports.
Financial ratios
Performance evaluation - ratio analysis - liquidity, profitability, shareholder, gearing. Capital expenditure - appraisal of capital expenditure payback, average rate of return, net present value, internal rate of return. Budgeting and financial forecasting - cash flow forecasts, budgeting procedures and techniques.
