On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO3 Explain the physiology of the human body with emphasis on selected organ systems
LO4 Develop an understanding of human nutrition and examine the role of food groups in human nutrition
LO5 Perform and report on relevant practical based experiments

Indicative Content
Fundamentals of Biochemistry
Chemistry review, water, structure and function of proteins, structure and function of carbohydrates, structure and function of lipids, structure and function of nucleic acids.
Metabolic Pathways
Overview of metabolism, anabolic and catabolic pathways, regulation of metabolism, role of ATP in metabolism, oxidation-reduction reactions.
Basic Physiology
Overview of human physiology of relevant organ systems e.g. digestion system.
Nutrients and foods
Overview of the food groups and macro- and micro-nutrients.
Lab Practicals
Range of laboratory sessions in the area of human biology related to the subject area.
