Module Description: This module is an introduction to the skills and knowledge required by managers in modern organisations. Students will consider the evolution of management and how this applies in today's business environment.

Introduction to Management
Functions of administrative management, the levels of management, importance of history and theory. Perspectives of management - classical, behavioural and quantitative perspectives.
Environment
Examining the internal and external environment of an organisation and its effect on administrative management.
Planning and Decision Making
Planning and organisational goals; types of plans; perspectives on decision making.
Organising
Organisational structure; job specialisation; departmentalisation, delegation and empowerment; reporting relationships; authority; co-ordination; centralisation and decentralisation.
Controlling
The nature and purpose of the control process; managing control in organisations; resistance to control; overcoming resistance to control.
