General Principles of Foundations
Function of foundations. General design procedure. Causes of settlement. Undrained and drained cases. Immediate settlement and consolidation settlement. Total and differential settlements
Bearing Capacity of Soils
Definitions of bearing capacity and presumed values. Empirical design approaches. Bearing capacity factors for granular and cohesive soils. Plate bearing, standard penetration and cone penetration tests and correlations for design purposes
Shallow Foundations
Types of shallow foundations. Allowable bearing pressures. Design approaches
Piled Foundations
General descriptions. Design of piles and pile groups by empirical methods and in-situ test methods. Pile caps. Test loading of piles
Foundations in Special Conditions
Foundations on fill and rock. Cavities, subsidence and water movement
