Module Description: This module covers those areas within communication studies that are relevant to students of business and accounting. Workshops will focus on developing writing, group work and presentation skills that will be used in the business and accounting context. The module will enable the development of transferable skills across the curriculum. Learners will also develop career plans and a commitment to lifelong learning and will assess the role of the accounting professional in society.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Apply strong business writing skills in the appropriate context.
LO2 Deliver a competent oral presentation on a topic, effectively chair meetings with a panel of speakers.
LO3 Critique leadership styles, relecting on their own personality and how this will influence leadership styles adopted.
LO4 Critically analyse the factors affecting team dynamics along with their own role in managing these dynamics successfully.
LO5 Develop a career plan, having reflected on professional and personal development goals.

Indicative Content
Sessions 1 & 2: Business Writing Skills
Process and principles of clear, persuasive writing. Structure and style of business correspondence (reports, memos, email etc.).
Sessions 3 & 4: Interpersonal Communication Skills
Verbal and non-verbal communication (including active listening and feedback skills), convening and participating at meetings, business events, appraisals and working with clients. Influencing skills, negotiation skills and conflict management. Developing own self-image and self-presentation skills in the professional business environment.
Sessions 5 & 6: Oral Presentations
Presentation preparation model. Techniques of delivery. Persuasive and influencing - communication. Dealing with questions. Chairing a session.
Sessions 7 & 8: Leadership
Introduction to the theory and practice of leadership. Key leadership styles. Description of a Trait Approach, application and strengths. Skills Approach. People management skills, personality types, problem solving and influencing people, negotiation and conflict management,
Sessions 9 & 10: Teamwork
Theory of team roles and team building. Critique of theory. Examination of how the 'scrum' methodology applies to teamwork. The virtual team.
Session 11: Lifelong Learning
Engagement with career goals, to include focus on developing skills repertoire. Awareness of transferable skills in professional and other environments. Development of credible career planning goals and a commitment to lifelong learning.
