On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Summarise power transformer requirements and their protection scheme for use in buildings.
LO3 Design LV distribution networks and overcurrent protection systems for common applications.
LO4 Competently select suitable cables/cable management systems for a range of services.
LO5 Identify the need for continuous power and specify equipment to overcome outages and disturbances.

Supplies for industrial and commercial buildings. Source impedance. Fault types. Determination of fault currents. Transients and asymmetry. Contribution of motors. Downstream effects. Earthing systems.
Practical Transformers.
Revision of theory. Effeciency, regulation, tap changing, polarity, winding notation, grounding. Construction, cooling, mounting. Faults and protection. Parallel operation. Division of faults and loads. Castele systems.
Distribution and Protection in Buildings.
Principles of LV distribution. Assessment of demand. Individual circuits. Branched radial distribution. Continuity of supplies. Protection schemes. Industrial fuses. LV CBs. Selection critera. Capacities. Coordination.
LV Cabling.
Typical power cables. Bus-bar and prefabericated systems. Industrial/commercial cable managment methods. Cable capacity calculations. Fault coordination. Handling and installation of cables. IT cables.
