Module Description: This module examines the development of a corporate approach to workforce management whereby HRM considerations become integral to strategic decision making. It outlines the role HR plays in the overall corporate strategy of the organisation and the role of the HR manager in the senior management team.

Indicative Content
• Organisations, corporate strategies and human resourcing.
HRM as a resource based model. Theoretical issues surrounding the human resource management field of expertise. Issues of centralisation or devolution of decision making. Decide whether seperate resource areas of an organisation are capable of enabling strategies to be executed successfully or whether the strategies of an organisation are being shaped to capitalise on the expertise of a particular resource area..
• Ethics and strategic human resourcing.
How HR strategies support a positive organisational culture. Nature of discrimination and equality. Introduction of HR strategies to promote equality and diversity in the workplace. The increasing importance of positive action initiatives in all areas of employee development.
• Employment law, industrial relations and human resourcing strategies
The effect of employment legislation on HR strategies. The impact of the EU. Trade union recognition. The growth in non-union employment relations. Alternatives to trade unions.
• Strategic Human Resource Management. Past and contemporary strategies.
The relationship betweeen business strategy models and strategic HRM models. Best fit versus best practice human resource management. Measuring the impact of strategic HRM on performance and the balanced scorecard.
•Implications of globalisation on today's workforce.
Impact of globalisation. Developments in Irish and global economies and their impact on workforce management.
