MECH7003 - BS Project - Research

Module Details

Module Code: MECH7003
Title: BS Project - Research
Long Title: Building Services Project - Re
NFQ Level: Intermediate
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2016/17 ( September 2016 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 5211 - Mechanical Engineering
Module Delivered in: 1 programme(s)
Module Description: This module offers the student the opportunity to assess their current level of understanding of an engineering disipline and to research this discipline in order to increase his/her breadth and depth of knowledge. The student will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary design team in defining the scope of a building services engineering problem and developing a project plan to aid the solution of the problem.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Research a specified HVAC system to increase their breadth and depth of knowledge
LO2 Apply project management and IT skills to enable a design team to plan and monitor a project and to achieve project milestones.
LO3 Utilse design methodologies, codes of practice and international standards to specify system and component variables.
LO4 Display initiative, teamwork and problem solving skills in their approach to defining an engineering problem.
LO5 Research the most likely low energy / low carbon options applicable to the specified HVAC system.

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

No requirements listed

Indicative Content
Research
Conduct a literature survey to ascertain relevant design methodologies, codes of practice and standards, and the state of current technology for a given HVAC system. Identify sytem components. Determine sytem and component design variables.
Management
Produce a Programme using a suitable software package and manage the design process as a multidisciplinary team, promote group interaction and exchange of information using "Brainstorming Sessions", produce bi-weekly progress reports and minutes of meetings.
