Module Description: This module incorporates the subject matter required for Naval Officers to develop the knowledge and skills required to operate at the strategic level in a complex and modern maritime security environment.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Develop strategic, long-term, medium-term and short-term planning, goal and objective setting and apply them in context to the Naval Service.
LO2 Review, analyse and evaluate a range of significant naval campaigns post world war two from a strategic and tactical viewpoint
LO3 Review national and European foreign and maritime policy and analyse them to identify the implications for Naval Service policy and practice
LO4 Review the historical development of the role of the Naval Service and evaluate this role in the current strategic environment.
LO5 Critically review the current policy, structure and practices of the Naval Service.

Prior to commencing the course, students will have completed 20 hrs direct contact and 60 hrs directed study through Dept Of Strategic Studies, NUIM
 
Indicative Content
Irish and European Security.
Application within a naval service context. Irish neutrality, Irish and European Foreign and common defence policy.
Contemporary Strategy
Applying within a naval service context, the use of force, deterrence and asymmetric threats.
Maritime Strategy.
Sea power, control of seaways, naval blockades, Constabulary roles for Naval Service, interdiction roles, humanitarian relief and responding to Government policy.
Maritime campaign analysis.
Review of significant post WWII naval campaigns and engagements, both offensive and defensive, and major maritime embargo enforcements.
Leadership studies.
Review and analysis of styles and roles of significant Maritime leaders and their impact upon their own era and history generally.
History of the Naval Service.
Creation of Maritime inscription service, evolution into modern Naval Service, Ship builds programme, and its application to the future development of the Naval Service.
