Module Description: The aim of this module is to provide practical up-skilling along with related theoretical knowledge to personnel who currently have basic Tungsten Active Gas Shielded welding skills. This module will be limited to the welding of butt joints on carbon steel and stainless steel pipe.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Identify and classify the various consumables used in Tungsten Active Gas Shielded welding of carbon and stainless steel.
LO2 Identify and prepare butt weld joints correctly.
LO3 Demonstrate the various techniques associated with Tungsten Active Gas Shielded welding in order to comply with welder qualification test EN 287.
LO4 Identify the reasons for and be able to purge a weld on stainless steel pipe.
LO5 Identify the various surface weld defects associated with Tungsten Active Gas Shielded welding, identify their cause and how they may be prevented.
LO6 Demonstrate the ability to successfully achieve the standard as defined by the specification EN 287.

Requirements

Have completed a welding module of the National Craft Certificate Apprenticeship programme at phase 4 or 6, or have at least 2 years experience of welding at a basic level.
 
Indicative Content
Safety
Safety precautions and procedures necessary when working in, or close to the welding environment.
Consumables
Identification and classification of the main categories of electrodes and shielding gases used in Tungsten Active Gas Shielded welding.
Quality Control
Identification of the various surface weld defects and the understanding of their effect on the integrity of the welded joint.
Plant Control and Set-up
Be able to set up the welding plant and adjust the welding parameters to suit the joint being welded.
Joint Preparation
Students will be instructed on the correct procedures to be followed in order to prepare weld specimens correctly.
Purging
The purging of Stainless steel pipe and the reasons for its use.
Practical Programme
Students will be instructed on the techniques required to carry out butt joints using the Tungsten Active Gas Shielded process on Carbon steel and stainless steel pipe in the PC, PF and HLO54 positions.
Inspection
Students will be familiarized with the procedures and techniques used to carryout visual, radiographic, bend and fracture tests on welded joints.
