Module Description: This module introduces the student to Building Energy Management Systems and other technologies that allow for efficient and effective operation of plant.

Building Energy Management Systems
Relationship between Building Energy Management Systems and Information Technology. Uses for Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS).
Components of Building Energy Management Systems
Controllers, central terminal, PC, monitor, printer, valves, actuators, sensors, outstation, points, setpoints, software programming, programs for BEMS, computer languages.
Communication with Building Energy Management Systems
Energy monitoring and targeting, data collection, data analysis, reporting, fault reports, action, alter set points, maintenance and scheduling. Integration. Alarm specification. IT infrastructure, local area network (LAN), wide area network, BACnet, LON Works.
Control Strategies for Building Energy Management Systems
Operating modes, optimum start heating, boost heating, time scheduling, fan overrun for air system, plant shutdown, alarms and safety strategies. Proportional Control and Integral Control. Integration. Time lags. Electromagnetic compatability. Security.
Commissioning a Building Energy Management Systems
Panel controls, hardware points, interlocks, control loops, alarms, supervisor and training.
Users of Building Energy Management Systems
User interface, level of operation. Interperation of graphics, alarm levels, maintenance scheduling and metering equipment. Recording and reporting. Monitor and control of systems.
Wireless
Comparing wireless networks with wired networks, wirelss technology, limitations, communication, health concerns, cost, system integration, wireless mesh networks and wireless for retrofitting.
Intelligent Control for Boiler Systems
Intelligent load compensating and sequence control of boilers. Retro fitting, installation, boiler efficiency, carbon reduction, control strategy and integration to other systems.
Smart Metering
Types of meter, communication of information, data management, consumption versus generation, energy efficient, time of day billing, benefits to the consumer and security.
Energy Reduction Strategy
Planned preventative maintenance programme, integrate with all the building operational systems, BEMS, energy labelling, energy tax and energy efficiency schemes.
