Module Description: |
This module deepens the student’s knowledge of the German-speaking regions and the people who live there. It also widens the student’s repertoire of basic German vocabulary and enhances his/her ability to converse in German.
Completion of this module results in attaining a level comparable to that of a midway point at Level A1 as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for language proficiency.

Indicative Content |
German Cultural Studies
A brief historical outline from 1938 to 1990; the dialects of Germany, Austria and Switzerland; travelling to and within Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Examples of project themes: ‘The diverse languages of Germany’; ‘An itinerary for a holiday in German-speaking Switzerland’; ‘Germany during the Second World War’; ‘A brief biography of a famous Austrian person’; ‘German Beer’; ‘Food in Switzerland’; 'Austrian festivals'.

Listening Skills
Basic classroom student to student and student to teacher interaction; audio materials; film materials.

Speaking Skills
Classroom interaction (paired and group role-playing); CALL interactive programmes. Themes: describing your home, your family and your hobbies; asking for and giving directions; booking a hotel room; booking bus and train tickets.

Writing skills
Writing short statements and questions.

Reading Skills
Reading short, basic paragraphs in German, e.g. paragraphs about people’s daily lives or short adverts.

Grammar
Areas of grammar covered for listening, speaking, writing and reading skills include: present tense (forms for all persons); separable verbs; modal verbs (present tense only); definite and indefinite articles in the Nominative and Accusative Cases; the Imperative (du and Sie forms); introduction to the Perfect tense.
