Module Description: The purpose of this module is to enable the student to have practical skills for basic workshop practices e.g. health and safety, marking out, pipe bending, interpretation of drawings, angles and use of set squares. The student will also have practical exposure to various jointing processes.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Identify aspects of health and safety in the workshop environment.
LO2 Produce a range of pipe-bending components using various procedures.
LO3 Select and identify marking out tools, hand tools, measuring equipment and work to perscribed tolerances.
LO4 Select and identify pipe jointing methods used on mild steel, stainless steel and galvinised steel.

Indicative Content
Cutting of Materials
Cutting, filing, values of cutting angle. Examples of cutting angles in hand and machine tools.
Pipe Threading
Use of hand/electric threading machines. Correct set-up and the secure clamping of work piece, and correct speed selection.
Marking out, measuring equipment and hand tools.
Care and use of marking out equipment including varnier callipers, set squares, templates, files, hammers and hacksaws etc.
Jointing Methods
Forms and applications of screw threads, flanges, fastenings in common use. Hand cutting of screw threads, use of taps and dies.
Safety
Personal safety. Instruction of safe working procedures in the use of marking out, hand tools and operation of machines and equipment. Standard operating procedures.
Pipe Bending.
Correct set up and use of pipe bending machines and methods.
