Module Description: This module is designed to introduce the student to the installation and operating principles of above ground drainage, below ground drainage, water supply, water treatment and sewage systems. It describes the operation of water treatment plant, filters, water sources, chemicals used, septic tanks, bio-cycle units, water economy and conservation.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Categorise the technical requirements of above and below drainage, water supply and treatment, sewage and waste water disposal, reuseable water, water economy and conservation.
LO2 Describe the safety and environmental requirements and hazards according to relevent and current legislation.
LO3 Classify the various components used in water treatment, rainwater,drainage and sewage systems. Water economy and conservation.
LO4 Sketch typical layouts of various system installations.
LO5 Solve well defined technical problems associated with sanitary, drainage and water systems.

Indicative Content
Above Ground Drainage
Sanitary appliances, traps, sanitary systems, pipework installation,materials. Testing, inspecting and maintenance of systems.
Below Ground Drainage
System installation, materials, sketch 3 main types of drainage system. Testing, inspection and maintenance of systems. Health and Safety.
Water Treatment
Hydraulic Cycle. Sources of water. Propereties of hard and soft water, PH Scale. Water analysis, filteration of water, sterilisation of water, water softening. Base exchange and piping of water softners, corrosion control, filters and chemicals. Sketching a design layout. Classification of water.
Independent Water Supply
Types of schemes, principals of generation, deep well submersible pumps, pumping units, pressure switch controls, pneumatic and pressure vessels. Sketching a design layout.
Sewage and Waste Water Disposal
Septic tanks, Bio-Cycle units, investigation, building regulations, bio filters. Location of tanks and percolation area. Pipework materials and joints. Soakways, cesspools and disposal of surface water. Bacterial action, B.O.D. De-Sluding and types of schemes. Grease traps and waste disposal.
Water Economy and Conservation
Water Regulations. Preservation of water quality, water economy, water meters, frost precautions, reuseable water. Disinfection of an installation. Testing, inspection and maintenance.
Confined Spaces
Safety, Health and Welfareat Work (Confined Spaces) Regulations 2001. Safe work practices. Entry permits. Hazards associated with a confined space. Characteristics of a confined space. Risk assessment. Emergency plans.
Site Visits and Seminars
Visiting various sites on campus as well as external site visits and to invite in guest speakers.
