Module Description: This module covers the basic safety and security requirements as stipulated in the STCW10 Manila Convention; aspects of this module include basic fire fighting, elementary first aid, ship and port security, personal survival training and enclosed space entry.This module is delivered as a block within the semester and the appropriate learning outcome(s) will be assessed at the end of each element.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Explain the theory of fire safety and firefighting aboard ship, use shipboard firefighting equipment and act as member of a ships firefighting team
LO2 Describe the principles of medical first aid and carry out basic medical first aid procedures
LO3 Demonstrate basic survival at sea procedures and techniques
LO4 Explain the STCW10 Manila specification of minimum standard of competence for seafarers with designated security duties on board ship
LO5 Describe the procedures onboard ship to ensure safe entry into an enclosed space

Indicative Content
Enclosed space entry theory
Definition. General Hazards. Responsibilities, need for entry. Risk assessment. Safe system of work. Confined Space - safe entry policy. Confined Space - safe entry procedure. Permit-to-work and permit-to-enter. Testing of atmosphere. Preparation for entering Confined Spaces. Personal Protection Equipment.
Enclosed space entry - practice
Use of Damage Control Unit and Fire Control Unit to demonstrate safe entry and rescue procedures.
Designated Security duties
Knowledge of current security threats and patterns. Recognition and detection of weapons, dangerous substances and devices. Recognition, on a non discriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioural patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security. Techniques used to circumvent security measures. Crowd management and control techniques. Security related communications. Knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans. Operation of security equipment and systems. Testing, calibration and at-sea maintenance of security equipment and systems. Inspection, control and monitoring techniques. Methods of pyhsical searches of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo and ship stores.
Basic Firefighting
Shipboard Fire fighting organisation, fire safety aboard ship, using extinguishers and other firefighting equipment, action in the event of fire, care and maintenance of fire-fighting equipment, practical firefighting
Medical First Aid
First aid equipment found aboard ship, first aid team, techniques and procedures, symptoms
Personal survival
Survival equipment and its correct use, survival techniques, dangers, practical training in use of equipment and techniques
