Module Description: |
To continue a suitable course of study giving Marine Engineering Students a clear understanding of the principles underlying the technology of materials and to enable them to apply these in practice. Also to provide a suitable course of study for students which would give them some of the practical capabilities of a craftsman, plus a wide knowledge of workshop practice.

Indicative Content |
Engineering Materials
A general understanding of the uses, limitations, compositions and physical properties of (a) different types of cast iron, (b) wrought iron, (c) medium and high carbon steels.

Heat treatment
Heat treatment of cast iron and straight carbon steels, critical points and equilibrium diagrams. Heat treatment of non-ferrous metals. Nitriding and case hardening. Simple treatment of destructive and non-destructive testing of heat-treated metals, tensile, hardness and toughness tests.

Centre lathes
Use of chucks, face plate, driving plate, turning between centres, taper turning, screw cutting in the lathe, eccentric turning and boring. Lathe accuracy and alignment tests

Milling Machines
Vertical, turret and horizontal models, plain and universal machines. Methods of attachment of cutters, up-cut and down-cut milling, function of backlash eliminator, straddle milling, gang milling, setting-up and clamping of work. The dividing head: simple indexing.

Surface Grinders
Surface grinding of materials to specific tolerances

Measurement and gauging
Principles of interchangeable production. Basic principles of the International Standards Organisation (ISO) system of limits. Types of fits. Care, use and construction of fixed and limit gauges, telescopic gauges, sine bars, toolmaker buttons, slip gauges, dial indicators and comparators, vernier bevel protractor, precision rollers and balls. Grade and surface finish of metals.

Safety Precautions in Oxy-acetylene and Electric Arc Welding
Correct earthing of electric equipment. Eye and face protection during welding and cutting. Storage and safe handling of gas cylinders. Welding of tanks and other containers which have contained materials likely to give rise to flammable or poisonous gases or vapors.

Methods of joining and thermal cutting
Manual Metal Arc (MMA) Welding. Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding. Metallic Inert Gas and Metallic Active Gas (MIG/MAG) Welding. Oxy-acetylene (OA) Welding. Oxy-fuel gas cutting. Arc cutting.
