Module Description: The aim of this module is to provide the student with a practical knowledge of the role of shipping and logistics in international trade.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe, in general terms, international trade, the transport industry and shipping in international trade, the shipping market, and the economics of shipping.
LO2 Identify the role, structures, and functions of the port and port hinterland.
LO3 Describe the purposes and function of the International Maritime Organisation and International Maritime Law.
LO4 Analyse communications, motivation, and teamwork theories and best practices.
LO5 Explain the management skills, leadership skills and teamworking skills required by the ship's officer.

Indicative Content
Ports & Port Hinterland
Port operations and port management structures, stevedoring, cargo handling, cargo documentation, customs procedures. Port hinterland.
Ship Types and Merchant Fleets
Different ship types, profile of the world fleet, ship ownership, the mega ships, shipping companies, different segments of shipping, flags of convenience and shipping conferences.
The Deck Department
Organisational structure, shipboard organisation, the ship's officer as a manager, management roles and functions.
Personal Effectiveness
Management styles, leadership styles, developing self confidence and assertiveness, people motivation, time management, grievance, and discipline. Cultural awareness and respect in dealing with crew diversity.
Teamwork
Team management. Developing the team, team roles, performance measurement and appraisal.
Communications
Report writing, preparing a project, oral communications: theories and communication best practices, cultural diversity.
Law of the Sea
Introduction to the Law of the Sea, territorial and other nationally controlled waters, right of innocent passage, marine insurance.
