Module Description: This module introduces the student to life on board a seagoing vessel. The student learns about the operation of a ship by working, under supervision, along with the ship's crew during a routine voyage cycle.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the ship, its culture, and organisation.
LO2 Perform duties as a Navigation Watch Rating and other related duties such as gangway watch, safety rounds
LO3 Participate as a team member during mooring operations.
LO4 Participate as a team member during an emergency drill.
LO5 Assist in the preparation and inspection of cargo spaces, cargo tanks, and similar spaces in non-cargo ships
LO6 Participate in the routine maintenance of the vessel.

Indicative Content
Safety Familiarisation
Emergency communications. Symbols and alarm signals. Emergency actions for man overboard, fire, or abandon ship. Escape routes, alarm points, weathertight and watertight doors.
Shipboard Familiarisation
Watchkeeping procedures and arrangements. Safety and emergency procedures. Company Fire and Safety Regulations. Vessel Safety Management System. Ship particulars.
Navigation Watch Rating
Watchkeeping duties in support of Bridge team. Steering by gyro and magnetic compass at sea and entering port. Changeover from automatic pilot to hand steering. Lookout duties. Basic environmental protection procedures. Pyrotechnic distress signals, EPIRB and SART.
Mooring Operations
Tying up and letting go the ship entering and leaving port. Anchoring. Stowage of ropes and wires. Apply stoppers to rope and wires. Operate winch and windlass.
Emergency Drills
Lifeboat and Firefighting drills. Lowering and recovering lifeboat (gravity and freefall). Lifeboat parts and provisions. Use fire hose, fire extinguisher, use of breathing apparatus and fireman's outfit. Use of rescue stretcher and first aid outfit.
Preparation of Cargo Spaces
Entering enclosed spaces. Inspection prior to loading. Hold preparation. Dunnage. Testing hold bilges. Hold lighting.
Shipboard Maintenance
Surface preparation. Application of paint coat by brush and spray. Rust prevention and removal. Routine maintenance of deck machinery. Hatch and doorway seal replacement.
