Module Description: This is the second semester of work placement. The student understudies the Ship's Officers and manages the crew under supervision.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Perform, under supervision, the duties of the Officer of the Watch.
LO3 Draw up a training plan for ship's ratings in emergency procedures.
LO4 Draw up a plan and supervise the ship's crew in the routine maintenance of the ship.
LO5 Reflect on the learning experience.

Workplacement Marine (Deck) - Initial seatime
 
Indicative Content
Voyage planning
Optimum routing. Weather routing. Mercator and gnomic charts and harbour plans. Mercator and Great Circle routes. Sailing directions and ocean passages of the world. Choice of navigation aids in strategic locations. Navtext and SafetyNet warnings.
Officer of the Watch - duties
Calculate and record compass errors. Operate navigation aids and radar. Apply collision regulations appropriately. Calculate ETA. Use sextant. IALA buoyage system. Select appropriate position fixing methods. Manage bridge team during the watch. Record meteorological events during watch.
Cargo Operations
Supervise the preparation of holds and deep tanks for loading. Supervise the operation of the ship's cargo gear. Supervise the loading and discharging of cargo. Ensure separation between bulk cargoes or packaged goods, if required. Supervise to ensure that adequate precautions are taken to ensure ventilation and facilitate inspections during the voyage. Use the IMDG Code. Inspect hatch covers, gear, and cargoes before and during discharging. Ensure that all cargoes are discharged in good condition at the correct destination. Ensure satisfactory trim, stability, hogging, and sagging at all times. Identify any damage to ship or cargo after discharging and establish possible causes.
Planning/Training
Methods of learning. Use of visual aids in training. Use of role play as training tool. Develops plans for lifeboat and fire drills. Develops emergency response plan for man overboard, collision, grounding, shipboard oil pollution incidents. Team leadership. Personnel supervision.
