Module Description: This module prepares the Learner to take responsibility for a team in the mooring and unmooring, anchoring and use of tugs in berthing the ship. As a work placement module this will be completed under the supervision of a Qualified Officer.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

This is a work placement module which is conducted on board ship. Learners can not proceed to sea unless they have successfully completed NAUT6035 Seafarer Basic Safety Training and possess a Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG 11)
 
Indicative Content
Mooring Operations
Securing mooring rope/wire to bitts. Fairleads. Winch operation. West country and chain stoppers. Care and protection of mooring ropes and wires. Self tension winches. Code of Safe Working Practice on mooring/unmooring. Communications during mooring operations. Procedures for tying up or letting go forward and aft.
Anchors and anchoring
Parts of the anchor. Marking on the anchor cable. Operation of windlass. Securing the anchor for sea. Walking out the anchor in preparation for letting go. Cable washers. Anchor ball and light. Securing the cable, hawse pipe and spurling pipe. Chain locker and bitter end. Stowing anchor cable. Communications during anchoring operations. Personal protective equipment for anchoring operations.
Berthing with tugs
Making fast a tug amidships, forward, aft. Letting go a tug. Personnel safety when working with tugs. Communications during towing operations.
