Module Description: This module will prepare the Learner to take responsibility for the preparation of the cargo compartments and supervision of the loading and discharging operations of the vessel. As a work placement module this will be completed under the supervision of a Qualified Officer.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Calculate and assess the vessel's stability and hull stresses at the end of a loading operation
LO3 Describe a ballast and deballast operation on board ship

LO5 Descibe a loading and unloading cargo operation on board ship
LO6 Reflect on the learning experience

This is a work placement module which is conducted on board ship. Learners can not proceed to sea unless they have successfully completed NAUT6035 Seafarer Basic Safety Training and possess a Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG 11)
 
Indicative Content
Ballast Operations
Setting up ballast lines. Operation of ballast pumps and eductors. Stripping ballast tanks. Sounding round. Loading and discharging ballast by gravity.
Cargo Space Preparation
Methods of cleaning cargo spaces. Testing and protection of hold bilges. Rigging cargo clusters. Dunnage and spar ceiling. Cargo securing equipment. Display of warning notices.
Stability calculations
Use of vessel stability booklet. Use of vessel stability computer. Draft surveys.
Cargo Space Inspection
Inspection of cargo hold/tank prior to loading and after discharging. Testing hold bilges. Testing and inspection of fire/smoke detection system. Examination of spar ceiling and dunnage. Testing of hatch/tank cover seals. Inspection of ladders and access points. Operation and testing of hold ventilation systems.
Loading/unloading
Loading and unloading operations. Methods of securing cargo and the Cargo Securing Manual. Cargo seperation and segregation. Dangerous goods and the IMDG Code. Tanker operations.
