Module Description: |
This module meets the STCW 2010 requirements for proficiency in the handling of survival craft and marine emergencies other than fire and the requirements for ratings as able seafarer deck. It covers the DOT requirements for proficiency as a seaman. It also meets the requirements for seafarers to have an underlying knowledge of the International Safety Management Code (ISM Code) and understand the hierarchy of control for enclosed space entry and the procedures for carrying out a rescue from enclosed spaces. This module is delivered as a block within the semester and the appropriate learning outcome(s) will be assessed at the end of each element.

Indicative Content |
Practical Seamanship
Contribute at able seafarer level to a safe navigational watch. Understand helm orders and communicate to the OOW on matters relevant to watchkeeping duties. Procedures for handover of the watch. Information required for a safe navigation watch. Contribute at able seafarer level to berthing, anchoring and other mooring operations. Function of mooring and tug lines. Capacities and safe working loads of mooring equipment. Procedures for making fast and letting go mooring lines. Weighing and letting go an anchor. Mooring to a buoy. Contribute at able seafarer level to the handling of cargo and stores. Safe handling, securing and stowage of cargoes including dangerous, hazardous and harmful substances and liquids. IMDG labelling. Contribute at able seafarer level to the safe operation of deck machinery. Use of valves, pumps, hoists, cranes, booms an related equipment. Use of windlass, winches and capstans. Use of hatches and watertight doors. Fibre and wire rope cable and chains including their ocnstruction, use, markings and maintenance. Rig and unrig bosn's chair, stage, pilot ladder and gangways. Practice seamanship skills. Knowledge of hoisting and dipping flags and main single letter signals (A, B, G, H, O, P, Q). Occupational health and safety precuations including working aloft and overside. Working in enclosed spaces. Lifting techniques. Electrical safety, mechanical safety, chemical and biohazard safety. Personal safety equipment. Apply precautions and contribute to the prevention of pollution of the marine environment. Contribute at able seafarer level to shipboard maintenance and repair.

Survival craft and emergencies
Launch and operate; liferafts, lifeboats, freefall lifeboat and rescue boats. Management of survivors after abandoning ship. Emergency signals and location aids. Helicopter rescue methods.

ISM Aims & objectives, Safety Management Systems, Document of Compliance, Safety Management Certificate, Observations, Non- Conformity, Internal & External Audit, Company responsibilities, planned maintenance, the link between ISM, PSC and Pollution prevention measures. Designated Person.

Enclosed Space
Understand enclosed space entry procedures, including the main hazards, knowledge & use of equipment (both testing & rescue), understand permits to work, tool box talks, job risk assessment and the legal aspects as they relate to enclosed space entry. Understand the dangers of adjacent spaces and the human elements involved in enclosed space accidents. Techniques for carrying out enclosed space rescue. Team preparation, training and drills as required under SOLAS.
