Module Description: This module provides the learner with the knowledge and competence required to ensure he/she can carry out the duties of a watchkeeping officer on a merchant vessel with regard to cargo operations, maintenance and survey of cargo handling and safety equipment.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Explain the duties and safety practices of the Officer of the Watch when engaged in cargo operations on a merchant vessel
LO2 Outline the handling and carriage requirements of general, bulk, unitised and deck cargoes onboard ship
LO3 Outline the dangers associated with the carriage of dangerous goods on board ship.
LO4 Describe the loading,discharging, carriage of bulk liquid including gas, chemical and liquefied cargoes.
LO5 Outline associated hazards and safety procedures of Bulk, liquid, gas, chemical cargoes and offshore support vessels.

Indicative Content
Safety Practices in cargo work
Factors affecting safety during cargo work, enclosed space entry, docks regulations, cargo gear maintenance. Contents of Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant seamen. MARPOL: Anti pollution regulations and practices.
Cargo Handling Equipment
Care and maintenance of cargo handling equipment. Different derricks & arrangements: Hallen, Velle, Stulken, union purchase,yo-yo. Cranes: types, advantages, controls. Heavy lift precautions.
General Cargo
Cargo space preparation and survey, cargo plans, stowage methods and calculations, use of dunnage. Officer of the watch duties and responsibilities. Hold damage. Cargo damage and pilferage.
Unitised and Roll on - Roll off
Cargoes suitable for unitisation, use of pallets, cargo equipment used to handle pallets. Container types,equipment used to handle containers, hazards in container carriage. Ro-Ro units, dangers involved in carriage of Ro-Ro units, stowage/securing of Ro-Ro units.Cargo/hold damage.
Bulk Cargoes
Definitions, main hazards associated with bulk cargoes, preparation of cargo compartments prior to loading. Stowage and securing of bulk cargoes. Requirements for vessels carrying bulk cargoes.
Oil cargoes
Cargo pipelines for crude oil and product carriers. Hazards and precautions when carrying oil cargoes. Venting systems, Inert Gas system, operation of Inert Gas system, gas testing equipment, tank washing with crude oil, static electricity causes and prevention, loading/discharging operations on tankers, ballasting operations, safety checklist.
Chemical cargoes
Properties and Hazards of bulk chemicals, precautions to be taken with chemical cargoes.
Gas Cargoes
Properties and Hazards of gas cargoes, precautions to be taken with gas cargoes.
Dangerous Goods
Dangerous goods code, Precautions for loading/discharging and requirements for stowing dangerous goods.
Deep Tank Cargoes
Cleaning, preparation and testing of deep tanks. Precautions when heating deep tanks.
OSV
Basic knowledge in vessels layout, equipment, scope of work and types of cargo being carried. safety aspect related to these ship types
