Module Description: This module covers the mandatory elements required before a person is permitted to proceed to sea to undergo training as a seafarer. It also includes guidance on the documentation required for a seagoing career and the programme of directed learning to be followed on board ship. This module is delivered as a block within the semester and the appropriate learning outcome(s) will be assessed at the end of each element.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the survival techniques and equipment provided on board ship to enable him/her to successfully abandon ship and assist in his/her rescue
LO2 Perform as a member of a shipboard firefighting team
LO3 Apply immediate first aid and act as a member of a ships first aid team
LO4 Outline personal responsibilty for safety on board ship and list their responsibilities towards the social environment on board.
LO5 List the requirements for documentation for seafarers
LO6 Explain the system of onboard training required of deck cadets when serving on board ship.

Personal Survival Techniques
Emergency situations. Evacuation. Survival Craft and Rescue Boats. Personal life-saving appliances. Survival at sea. Emergency radio equipment. Helicopter assistance.
Fire fighting
Theory of fire. Fire prevention. Fire detection. Fixed fire extinguishing systems. Miscellaneous fire fighting equipment. Ship fire fighting organisation. Fire fighting methods. Fire fighting drills.
Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
Safe working practices. Human relationships on board ship. Communicate effectiveley on board ship. Emergency proceedures. Marine environment anti-pollution measures. Social responsibilities on board ship.
First Aid
General principles. Body structure and functions. Positioning of casualty. The unconscious casualty. Resuscitation. Bleeding. Management of shock. Burns and scalds. Accidents caused by electricity. Rescue and transport of casualty.
Basic seafarer familiarisation
Dischage books, passports and Seaman's ID cards. Signing on/off ship's Articles. Irish Maritime Development training grant scheme. Deck Rating Record of Training Book and in-service placement scheme.
