This module covers, in depth, the operational requirements for merchant ships whilst working cargo. It also includes crew training and vessel maintenance. It includes the material required under the IMO STCW 95 Code TableII/2 and the regulations of the Department of Transport for senior deck officers.

Indicative Content |
General cargo
Carriage and handling of general cargo. Ro-Ro and container cargoes. Unitised cargoes. Procedures for heavy lifts. Ventilation. Deck and refrigerated cargoes. Design and operation of lifting equipment. Platform supply vessels. Codes of safe practice.

Dangerous Goods
Apply the provisions of relevant codes and regulations on the carriage of dangerous goods in packaged form. Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk Cargoes and International Grain Regulations.

Bulk Liquid cargoes
Carriage and handling of cargo in bulk liquid including petroleum, chemicals and gas in tankers. Cargo characteristics. Electrostatic hazards. Inert gas operations. Vapour control arrangements. Cargo transfer systems. Tank cleaning operations. Monitoring equipment and instrumentation. Precautions and operational requirements.

Regulations and Codes
Application of regulatory requirements concerned with safety certification and safety officials. Risk assessment. Features of the ISM Code. Preparations necessary to maintain a vessel's class, safety and loadline certificates. MARPOL.

Crew training and organisation
Provisions of the current Merchant Shipping legislation, Codes of Practice and Marine Notices. Organisation and training requirements of the ship's crew. Means of access on board. Maintenance of lifting plant and certification. SMS contingency planning and routine duties.

Maintenance
Maintenance of the ship's structure and deck equipment. Causes of corrosion and its prevention. Use of protective coatings. Properties of the paint types. Paint systems in common use on board ship. Standard of surface preparation.
