Module Description: This module introduces the learner to the practical elements of shipboard operations. It provides learners with basic seamanship skills to enable them to assist in mooring, anchoring, port and sea watchkeeping duties and routine work on deck. The security element of this module is intended to provide the knowledge required to enable personnel without designated security duties to enhance ship security. It also provides training on enclosed space entry. This module is delivered as a block and the assessments will be completed at the end of the block

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
Ship parts and nautical terms
Names of ship parts and equipment. Common nautical terms.
Knots and Ropework
Rope use and storage. Common knots, bends and hitches. Whipping. Splices in three strand rope. Blocks and tackles. Bosun's chair and stage.
Mooring and anchoring
Mooring equipment and procedures. Mooring lines and use of stoppers. Types of anchors. Anchor equipment and procedures.
Watchkeeping duties
Watchkeeping schedules and duties. Lookout duties and terms used. Helmsman duties and helm orders.
Safety and access
General safety aboard ship - Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen. Pilot ladder, Gangway and accommodation ladder. Correct rigging and necessary safety equipment. Hatch operation. Working aloft, over the side.
Enclosed space entry theory
Definition. General Hazards. Responsibilities, need for entry. Risk assessment. Safe system of work. Confined space - safe entry policy. Confined space - safe entry procedure. Permit-to-work and permit-to-enter. Testing of atmosphere. Preparation for entering Confined Spaces. Personal Protection Equipment.
Enclosed space entry - proactice
Use of Damage Control Unit and Fire Control Unit to demonstrate safe entry and rescue procedures.
Security Awareness
Current security threats and patterns. Ship and port operations and condidtions. Awareness of relevant international conventions, codes and recommendations. Awareness of relevant government legistation and regulations. Definitions. Handling sensitive security-related information and communications. Security responsibilities. Threat identification, recognition and response. Actions required by different security levels. Reporting security incidents. Awareness of contingency plans, security drills and exercises.
