Module Description: This module is designed to provide students with an understanding of the area of nutrition and its relationship with health-related matters such as diet, weight management and obesity.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Discuss the role of macro-nutrients as sources of energy; their digestion and absorption.
LO3 Describe the behavioural, biological and environmental determinants of obesity.
LO4 Discuss the role of nutrition and hydration in optimising performance.

Indicative Content
Fundamentals of Nutrition
Components of energy expenditure, storage and food energy. What constitutes a healthy diet.
Nutrients
The role of carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals in normal body functioning and health; digestion and absorption.
Obesity and Weight Management
Behavioural, biological and environmental determinants of obesity and its prevalence. How diet and PA/exercise contribute to energy balance. Different approaches to body composition measurement.
Nutrition for the Athlete
Role of macronutrients, micronutrients and hydration for optimal performance. The female triad. Myths and misconceptions on the use of supplements.
