Module Description: This module aims at providing students with skills and knowledge relevant to the production of herbal preparations for therapeutic and healthcare applications.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Critically discuss issues pertinent to the production, packaging and storage of herbal substances, preparations and products for over the counter sale.
LO3 Critically evaluate procedures relative to quality and safety issues.
LO4 Critically appraise issues that arise in the preparation of herbal medicinal products and preparations for external use.
LO5 Critically appraise issues that arise in the preparation of herbal medicinal products and preparations for internal use.

Indicative Content
Introduction
Review of the history of pharmaceutical science; historical figures of pharmacy/medicine; traditional formulation procedures.
Regulations and guidelines
Production, packaging and storage - biological resources and conservation, agricultural production, preparation and extraction; packaging; storage; standardisation and quality control (quality and safety) - stability, bacterial contamination, toxins, sterile preparations.
Extraction procedures
Principles of production of extracts - aqueous extracts, aqueous-ethanol extracts, glycerol extracts, distillation.
External products
Principle of emulsions and emulsifying agents - creams, ointments, lotions and suspensions, suppositories, plasters, poultices including their role and use in the body.
Internal products
Principles of tablet and capsule preparation, linctuses, syrups; inhalations, gargles/mouth wash including their role and use in the body.
