This module is for students whose first language is not English. It is designed for first-year students across all faculties. It aims to improve the student's knowledge of the English language and introduces the student to Irish culture.

Indicative Content |
Irish Cultural Studies
Brief outline of geography and modern Irish history and traditions. Distinguishing traits of Irish culture.

Listening Skills
Audio materials. Classroom interaction such as understanding questions, dictation, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), and film materials.

Speaking Skills
Pronunciation of English. Classroom interaction (for example, asking and answering questions about yourself and your family).

Writing Skills
Writing the English alphabet. Writing simple texts. Answering examination papers.
|
Reading Skills
Reading short, basic paragraphs in English, for example: advertisements, magazine and newspaper articles.

Grammar
Basic tenses: past, present, and future simple. Comparatives/superlatives. Definite and indefinite article. Negation.
