On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Describe structural and biological properties of viruses and phage.
LO3 Explain the importance of cell culture to virology.
LO4 Give an account of the derivation, preparation and maintenance of primary cell cultures and continuous cell lines.
LO5 Discuss the range of replication and gene expression strategies used by viruses.
LO6 Discuss different host responses to viruses (innate and specific immunity).
LO7 Explain the concepts of virus pathogenesis and virulence.
LO8 Distinguish different mechanisms of pathogenesis and modes of transmission of viruses.
LO9 Give an account of the epidemiology, transmission, pathogenesis and underlying virus life-cycle associated with selected virus diseases.
LO10 Give an account of the development, use and impact of virus vaccines.
LO11 Describe practical techniques for the propagation, identification, detection and quantification of viruses.

Virology
Virus taxonomy, properties of viruses and phage, virus genome replication and gene expression strategies, pathogenesis and virulence, modes of transmission, host innate and specific immune response to viral infection, viral vaccines, viral epidemiology, hepatitis viruses, viruses of the respiratory tract (including influenza virus and SARS), HIV and AIDS.
