Module Description: This module, which is suitable for English learners at B2+ level, focuses on the development of core language and academic skills for university.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 deliver a well researched presentation on a topic of contemporary relevance in their discipline making use of appropriate language and communicative conventions.
LO2 extract both global and detailed messages from an extended piece of complex speech and respond critically to these.
LO3 apply a range of reading strategies to complex written texts in order to identify and respond to both global meaning and details.
LO4 produce a clearly and logically structured piece of written discourse, making use of appropriate register, discourse markers, and conventions.
LO5 make accurate use - in both speech and writing - of a range of grammatical and linguistic structures in line with CEFR level B2+.

Indicative Content
Presentation skills for university
Researching, preparing and delivering an extended presentation making accurate use of a range of language, linguistic structures, grammatical structures, and cohesive devices. Applying suitable register, vocabulary and topic lexis, as well as effective presentation and interaction strategies. Responding spontaneously to questions from audience.
Efficient reading strategies and skills
Development of a range of reading strategies tailored to text and context. Practising the skills of identifying and respoding critically both to global messages and to details within complex, extended written texts.
Writing in the academic context
Familiarisation with and practice of writing skills and conventions for key genres within the university context. Familiarisation with conventions of appropriate documenting and integrating research.
Lecture and listening skills
Achieving a global understanding of an extended piece of speech. Extracting and responding critically to critical details. Articulating a critical response to these drawing on a range of information sources.
Language range and accuracy
Developing capacity to make use of a range of linguistic and grammatical structures with flexibility and fluency. Working on self-correction and feedback utilisation.
