Module Description: |
This module, suited to students at the B2+ to C1 levels on the CEFR, provides opportunities for students to develop the communication skills for their specific subject areas and discipline focuses.

LO1 |
communicate complex information clearly, precisely and accurately in the form of a researched oral presentation, expand key points at length and in depth, and respond spontaneously and in detail to questions. |
LO2 |
access and isolate information from complex extended texts in a variety of genres typical of their discipline, and synthesise ideas from these to develop an argument or narrative. |
LO3 |
structure, support and develop an extended piece of writing in a genre or genres typical of their discipline area. |
LO4 |
engage effectively in formal and semi-formal written and oral correspondence, making a broad range of relevant linguistic and lexical resources. |
LO5 |
use a range of language structures and general and discipline-specific vocabulary flexibly and fluently in line with the communicative conventions of study- and work-related scenarios. |

Indicative Content |
Writing for specific fields of study
Conventions of genres (e.g. reports) for varied disciplines; recognising and composing components of academic and professional texts (e.g. abstracts, literature reviews, methodology, findings, discussions); register conventions for extended writing and correspondence across disciplines; conducting, documenting and writing up research in an extended format.

Correspondence at university and in the workplace
Formal and semi-formal emails, reports, meeting agendas and minutes, meeting simulations.

Reading skills for complex texts
Selective and extensive reading strategies for accessing complex texts; strategies for isolating, paraphrasing, responding to and integrating ideas from extended technical and academic texts in the relevant discipline area; analysis of textual and linguistic features typical of the discipline and application of these.

Presentation, discussion and interaction skills
Effective presentation structure; developing ideas in a prepared presentation; integrating research into a presentation; dealing effectively with Q&A; responding spontaneously to questions and / or requests for clarification or further information; participating in and leading discussions of complex ideas; engaging constructively in workplace communication simulations.
