Module Description: This module is designed for Erasmus and international students who wish to consolidate their competencies in English at CEFR B2 level. It will facilitate their social engagement in a new environment and enable them to participate effectively in a degree programme delivered entirely through English.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 understand and respond critically to extended speech and lectures using a range of relevant listening strategies.
LO2 participate actively in a discussion with a good degree of fluency and spontaneity, offering justification for viewpoints and responding effectively to the contributions of others.
LO3 read, understand and respond to articles and reports on contemporary and discipline-related topics, using textual and contextual comprehension skills to identify and comment upon viewpoints or arguments expressed.
LO4 write well structured informative and argumentative texts with a good degree of linguistic, grammatical and lexical accuracy.

Indicative Content
Written production
Skills, language, and vocabulary for the clear and accurate expression of information and critical evaluation in writing. Strategies for synthesis of, integration of and commentary on information and ideas from a range of relevant information sources.
Reading skills
Employing a variety of reading strategies to gain global and/or detailed understanding of extended texts in own disciplinary field or on topics of contemporary relevance. Using textual and contextual information including metatext to locate information of particular relevance and to determine meaning.
Discussion skills
Development of a range of appropriate general and topic-specific lexis to engage in and help develop an extended discussion on a topic of contemporary significance or disciplinary relevance. Skills and vocabulary for reliable communication of detailed information and evaluation.
Lecture skills
Developing critical listening skills to allow identification of main and secondary points; identifying and using emphasis; understanding the learning purposes of note-making; note-taking strategies; strategies for dealing with unfamiliar vocabulary and/or concepts.
Grammatical accuracy
Review of key past, present and future tenses, modal verbs, conditionals and passives. Adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions. Subject-verb agreement.
