Module Description: This module provides engineering students with a foundation for reflection on and analysis of the social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgements. It develops their ability to communicate effectively with the engineering community and society at large.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Reflect on the ethical and social implications of decisions they will take as part of engineering and multi-disciplinary teams.
LO2 Communicate effectively (orally and in writing) to a variety of audience types, selecting communication tools appropriate to the intended audience.
LO3 Organize formal meetings, producing documentation in the form of agendas and minutes.
LO4 Prepare a technical report from appropriate engineering and scientific literature sources.

Indicative Content
Communication
Selecting appropriate media for specific audiences and purposes. Oral communication: Presentation skills, voice projection, eye contact, non-verbal communication, making a connection with an audience. Use of visual media communication methods.
Technical report writing
Revision of principles of written communication skills. The literature review process. Sources of appropriate peer-reviewed documentation. Analysis and synthesis of information. Use of citations and referencing methods. Presentation of technical reports and documents.
Ethics in Civil and Structural Engineering
An introduction to the role of ethics in engineering projects. Includes communication and decision-making processes for internal and external stakeholders in civil engineering projects. EI Code of Ethics. Academic integrity.
Meetings and group management
Function of meetings, meeting procedures, roles of Chairperson and Secretary. Common problems with meetings and groups. How to run crisp, productive meetings. Various types of minutes and leadership styles. Use of group contracts.
