Module Description: This module will explore and develop visual literacy using the elements of image making for graphic design across a wide range of media and applications, through exploration and creative experiments.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Use image making tools and materials with competence and skill.
LO2 Create a series of drawings as a means of image generation, investigation and expression.
LO3 Produce image making elements of line,shape,value, texture and colour for graphic design.
LO4 Understand the role of the sketchbook/visual diary in relation to the gathering of visual and textural information in the development and structuring of imagery.

Indicative Content
Line:
Exploration of line and line quality. Expressive line. Spatial characteristics of line. Lyrical and fluid line. Constricted and aggressive line. Gesture line, continuous line, contour line, slow contour, cross contour, blind contour line.
Value:
Exploring value relationships, ways of creating value, value scale, and value reduction, using value to describe structure, weight and space. Expressive use of value.
Shape:
Investigation of shape as plane and volume. Geometric and organic shape, positive and negative shape.
Colour:
Colour theory. Colour terminology, hue, value, chroma. Colour mixing, Colour schemes contrast and harmony, analogous/complementary colour. Spatial characteristics of colour. Psychology of colour, symbolic colour and colour expression.
Texture:
Actual texture, Simulated texture, Invented texture. Texture and space. Additive materials to create texture mixed media collage and transferred image.
Drawing:
As a method of enquiry and recording.
Media:
Graphite, charcoal, pastel, ink, paint.
Research and Investigation:
Visual diary/sketchbook.
