Module Description: |
This Invasion Games module is one of the 'Games' suite of modules (in addition to 'Net' and 'Strike/Field' Games) on the programme, and will be delivered through the lens of a variety of Invasion Games (e.g., Gaelic football, Soccer, Basketball, Rugby). Invasion Games are team games in which the objective is to attack the oppositions' territory, for the purpose of scoring (i.e. goals and/or points), while keeping their scores to a minimum. Core thematic areas such as technical development, tactical awareness, and rules and regulations, in addition to the pedagogical development of all students, will form the basis of the module content.

Module Recommendations
This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).
|
|
Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.

Indicative Content |
Sports Pedagogy in Invasion Games
The concept and breadth of Invasion Games will be introduced on a generic level, while a variety of games (e.g., gaelic football, soccer, basketball, rugby) will be explored individually in depth across the semester. Pedagogical strategies will be explored and developed to foster effective and appropriate delivery of the related technical, tactical, and regulatory aspects of each game in a post-primary school setting. Formative assessment, feedback and the critical role of reflective practice (before and after class) is embedded into this practical experience on a weekly basis to support the learning process.
|
TGFU & the Role of Curriculum Models
Introduction to curriculum models and how they reflect a specific philosophy with regard to what is most important in a specific strand of the current post-primary physical education curricula. A specific emphasis is placed on the TGFU curriculum model, which is an inquiry approach to games teaching where 'play' is seen as the most important aspect of a game, and therefore is taught before any emphasis on skill acquisition. This places the emphasis of learning on the 'why', rather than the 'how'.
|
The Role of Reflective Analysis in Sports Pedagogy
The ability to reflect critically on one's performance, and that of one's peers, either on the same team or in opposition, plays a significant role in this module, both from the tactical awareness and skill development perspectives. Peer analysis and feedback will form a core component of every class where the observation-analysis-feedback loop will be developed on an individual and collective basis.
|
Invasion Games & the Community Connection
Invasion games (e.g., gaelic football, soccer, basketball, rugby) are some of the most popular team sports in Ireland. Therefore, there is scope to explore the cultural and community impact of these games on Irish (and international) society. There is also great scope to link and collaborate with local sporting organisations to establish a 'community' identity and culture in this space. Emphasis will also be placed on creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for all, while exploring the respective sporting organisation's policies and practices in this regard (e.g. non-competitive and/or recreational game-play).
