Module Description: Learners will be introduced to the key concepts of effective oral and written communication of research to both technical and non-technical audiences. Within core public speaking skills, learners will be taught how to communicate their research effectively and confidently and use presentation software to enhance their communication. Within core writing skills, learners will be taught how to effectively communicate their research through variety of traditional and non-traditional media..

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
Communicating your research to both technical and non-technical audiences
Identifying audience composition and expectations. Selecting content to reflect background of the audience. Improving clarity and focus of communication. Designing research purpose statements. Highlighting relevance, impact, and applications of the research. Incorporating concepts of Universal Design Learning to increase accessibility for a diverse group of stakeholders.
Public Speaking Skills
Core public speaking skills for use in a variety of presentation formats. Persuasive communication. Creating a narrative. Engagement with audiences. Preparing for question and answer sessions.
Core writing skills
Core writing skills to improve readability and impact. Planning a document outline. Identifying key messages. Clear and logical structuring of documents. The editing process.
Effective oral presentations
Avoiding "Death by PowerPoint". Using a minimalist approach for presentations. Selection of presentation software and formats for different styles of presentation. Use of visual cues. Accessibility.

Assessment Description
A 1,000 word article, tailored for a non-technical audience i.e., the general public, communicating the core concept, impact, and wider applications of the student’s research project (or a selected aspect of it). The student should demonstrate understanding and application of the core writing skills portion of the module.

Assessment Description
A short oral presentation (Thesis in 3 format) of the student’s research project (or a selected aspect of it) and accompanying visual aids, designed for a broad audience i.e., technical and non-technical. The student should demonstrate understanding and application of the public speaking skills and presentation design portions of the module.

This module is reassessed solely on the basis of re-submitted coursework. There is no repeat written examination.
