Module Description: This module is one of the Coaching Science suite of modules. This module will provide students with advanced practical and theoretical knowledge relevant for sports coaching and management of elite athletes and teams.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Effectively review and discuss components associated with positive coach athlete relationships based on relevant literature
LO2 Critically analyse methods of physical, technical and tactical preparation of athletes based on the needs and demands of the sport.
LO3 Review and appraise the training practices, methods and approaches of a mentor coach based on best practice as identified in scientific literature.
LO4 Plan, implement and review elements of a coaching session for an elite sports coaching team/ athlete.

Indicative Content
Coach Athlete Relationship
Quantitative evidence from scientific literature and case studies examining development of positive coach athlete relationship. Role of the coach in the development of positive team culture and team cohesiveness. Discussion of approaches such as Self Determination Theory within a coaching context.
Physical preparation based on needs of athletes and demands of sport
How profiling can be used in individual and team environments. Examining movement demands of sports using scientific literature to develop training programme. Monitoring of athlete training load and markers of wellness.Monitoring of internal and external training load.
Periodisation of training year
Types of periodisation, e.g. tactical periodisation, types of microcycles. Development different components of fitness within annual periodised plan. Peaking for competition, use of tapering and unloading within periodised plan.
Technical and tactical development
Examination of research on technical and tactical development within a sports context. Investigation of evidence supporting the use of elements such as games based approaches, external cues, constraint led coaching.
Work with mentor coach
Students will work with a mentor coach for a period of 6 sessions. This will provide students with an insight into the approach, methods and training practices of an Elite Coach.

Assessment Description
Review the training practices of a mentor coach based on best practice scientific literature. The feedback loop from mentor coach to student coach is a continuous process throughout the semester.
