Module Description: This module explores the burgeoning genre of musical theatre during the nineteenth-century through contextual study and practical application. Academic writing skills are developed to incorporate scholarly sensitivity.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
Musical Theatre Chorus
Rehearsal and performance of repertoire from the nineteenth century; dynamics and vocal clarity; applied musicianship skills (sight-reading and major intervals [1 - 8]).
Repertory Studies
Theatrical entertainment in the nineteenth century and sociocultural developments; melodrama, minstrelsy, burlesque and vaudeville; European operetta and British music hall; Gilbert and Sullivan; scholarly sensitivity.
Theory and Rudiments of Music
Grouping of notes and rests, triplets and rhythmic composition; ledger lines; major (A, Bb and Eb) and minor (A, E, D) scales, key signatures and tonic triads; intervals and degrees of the scale.
