Module Description: |
This module is designed to introduce students to the core physical education activities of gymnastics and dance in a safe, inclusive and educationally meaningful way. The student's learning in these artistic and expressive activities will be developed via the process of (i) composition/choreography, (ii) performance, and (iii) reflection.
|
Learning Outcomes |
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: |
# |
Learning Outcome Description |
LO1 |
Demonstrate effective control of the body and kinaesthetic awareness in gymnastics- and dance-related phases and sequences of movement |
LO2 |
Compose (gymnastics) and choreograph (dance) creative performances, individually and cooperatively in groups, incorporating various styles, apparatus/props and levels of complexity |
LO3 |
Critically reflect on their own movement, and that of their peers, in individual and group performances |
LO4 |
Create a digital portfolio of learning incorporating a scheme of work for gymnastics and dance, in addition to effective teaching resources, personal reflections, and safety considerations for one's self and others in the learning environment |

Module Recommendations
This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).
|
|
Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.

Indicative Content |
Composition & Choreography
Complementary theoretical and practical class content where the theory of composition is applied to gymnastics performance and the theory of choreography is applied to dance performance. Emphasis on the importance of a clear and appropriate beginning and end to the performance. The main body of performance actions to be drawn from appropriate selection and variation of movements, incorporating contrast and complementary actions with accuracy using apparatus and/or props where appropriate. The role, and challenges, of progressing from individual to group performance.
|
Performance in Gymnastics & Dance
The importance of planning for, and executing, safe and inclusive gymnastics and dance performance. Emphasis on clarity and mastery of the body in space and while using apparatus, whether in independent or inter-dependent contexts. The role of space, and spatial awareness in developing and executing phrases of movement will form a core component of this performance-related content. Mixed ability considerations will always be to the fore here, as they should in be in school settings also. Introduction to various gymnastics disciplines such as rhythmic and fundamental acro-gymnastics.
|
Reflective Analysis in the Performance Process
As artistic and aesthetic activities, the ability to reflect critically on one's movement, and that of one's peers, plays a significant role in this module. This extends to both independent and inter-dependent group situations, where the skilled process of observation-analysis-communication will be developed in every single class. The principles of aesthetic evaluation, evident in performance, will be introduced and applied to the reflective process in both the gymnastics and dance environments. The 'Personal and Social Responsibility' curriculum model is embedded in this module to encourage a set of unique learning experiences, where students are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves and their learning, including respecting the rights and feelings of others.
|
Safety & Personal Care
Personal safety, and safety of your peers, is a critical element of gymnastics and dance activities. Specific themes related to the safe delivery of both activities include the selection of age- and developmentally-appropriate exercises and tasks, safe use and care of gymnastics mats and other apparatus/props, appropriate support for more challenging actions (e.g. hand stand), communication, respect and awareness in partner and group tasks.
