Module Description: This module examines the principles of and approaches used in residential care practice across a range of areas with a particular focus on the relationship of the professional and the person who requires support.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Overview of Residential Care Practice in Ireland
Brief overview of social care history and societal structures, legislation, standards and human rights frameworks in practice, residential care for children, residential care for people with disabilities, residential care in other areas, importance of care plans, policies and procedures, after care, independent living in the community. (Domains: 2.12, 3.13, 5.1, 5.14).
Professional Practice in Residential Care Work
Self-care of the professional, dealing with stress and burnout, assessing suitability to work in residential care, continuing professional development requirements, meeting CORU’s standards of proficiency and code of ethics as a social care worker, the importance of supervision and reflection, teamwork. (Domains: 1.9, 1.22).
Putting People Who Require Support First, in Residential Care
Safeguarding, recognising and reporting abuse, importance of promoting quality of life, awareness of restrictive practice, develop person centred plan based on short and long term life goals. (Domains: 1.3, 2.3, 2.4, 3.8, 5.11).
