Module Description: This module will allow students to investigate and research how their individual interests within the programme of study can be displayed, captured and promoted. Students will explore the visual reference to backgrounds, propping, styling, camera angles, lighting, colour theory and design principals. These methods will provide the foundation to the creation of content, and serve as visual reference for when students illustrate their layouts.

Students will learn to prepare and edit photographs and video content within appropriate software, and ensure content is ready for the publication on their online portfolio platform. Showcasing their creative content connected to the programme of study to promote their transferable skills, interests and experiences. Students will also gain insight into various design tools.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Create original, design solutions in reflective visual journals through visual research of the latest trends in content creation in relation to the programme of study.
LO2 Operate digital cameras effectively and demonstrate through their practical assignments the use of f-stops, depth of field, iso, shutter speeds, white balance, framing and composition.
LO3 Display an understanding of the communicative role of content, and the effective use of design methodologies.
LO4 Apply various image and video editing skills and techniques using appropriate software for the purpose of correcting or enhancing content to be published online or in print.
LO5 Develop and implement a Social Media and Project Plan, utilising learner-generated digital content.
LO6 Implement a clear and accessible design and demonstrate effective use of accessibility checker tools.

Indicative Content
Design Methodologies - Planning and Preparation - 20%
Critique the use of framing, composition, design principals, colours and textures used in existing examples of photography and videography in relation to the programme of study. Design methodologies: exploring the brief, reflective visual journals and visual research. Storytelling through Content. Visual communication, visual metaphors, refined visuals & image presentation. Explore various styling techniques/trends (The work of other photographers, stylists and digital content creators).
Photographic Tools - 30%
Functionality of a camera. Exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed, iso and advanced shooting features, such as metering, focusing and white balance controls. Utilising tools to create clear and accessible design elements for effective communication.
Introduction to Content Editing - 30%
Explore file and compression formats for different applications (e.g. JPEG, PNG, TIFF, HEIC, MP4). Resolution for screen and print, dpi, ppi, pixels, monitor, resolutions, colour calibration. Accessibility checker tools for colour and design. Image manipulation and retouching; basic adjustments, presets, colour correction, local and global adjustments, cropping and resizing. The basics of video editing. Design tools and software to develop logos, posters, packaging, labels, etc.
Social Media - 20%
Developing a social media and project plan. Implement and maintain a social networking platform to digitally publish and promote learner generated content. Utilise cloud based technologies to manage and store digital content such as images, videos, etc.. Analytics: collecting data, using social management and monitoring tools.

Online Content Portfolio - Submission of a portfolio of learner generated content connected to the developed social media and project plan (student led). To be based on the programme of study or the workplace. Final presentation of work at the end of semester to demonstrate skills and learnings.

This module is reassessed solely on the basis of re-submitted coursework. There is no repeat written examination.
